With the weather all hot and muggy again, I haven’t been in much of a mood for anything hot for breakfast. Still, one can’t run on empty when heading to work, so a filling but nevertheless refreshing option needs to be found.

Thanks to a newfound Instagram buddy, I found exactly what I needed.

Smoothie time!

A smoothie is what Manila’s urban denizens need to beat the heat.

However, since we’re looking at something more substantial than another of those cheap but sugar-loaded fruit shakes, other ingredients to fill you up and not out have to come into play.

This smoothie only has five ingredients: milk, nuts, ice, a banana, & some cinnamon. It may sound like a weird-arse concoction, but I assure you that it is absolutely good.

The texture is rich and creamy, the flavor is sweet and nutty. Plus, it has the additional virtue of filling you up and shooting down any mid-morning cravings. It’s also customizable: swap the milk for soy or nut milk if you’re lactose intolerant and you can toss in some dark chocolate abd/or dried fruit for extra oomph.

Breakfast on the go blendie

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup mixed unsalted nuts
  • 1 whole ripe banana, peeled
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • A few ice cubes

Place all the ingredients in a blender & blitz at the strongest setting for 30 seconds. Lower speed a notch & blend for 20 seconds more. Pour into a glass & serve immediately.

Serves 1.
